Ankaragücü President Attacks Referee After Süper Lig Match

An ugly incident occurred on Monday evening in the Süper Lig, Turkey’s highest league. After the 1-1 draw between MKE Ankaragücü and Caykur Rizespor, referee Halil Umut Meler was physically attacked by Ankaragücü President Faruk Koca.

Pictures circulating on social networks show how the 59-year-old attacked the referee after the final whistle and hit him in the face with his fist. Meler sank to the ground, holding his hands in front of his face, while others involved, including players, kicked him.

Only after a while did the crowd disperse, referee Meler was surrounded by security forces and taken into the dressing room. Severe swelling had developed under his left eye.

Rizespor had previously secured a late equalizer with a last-minute goal in the 97th minute. Ankaragücü took the lead early through Olimpiu Vasile Morutan (14th). Ankaragücü striker Ali Sowe received a yellow-red card in the 50th minute. Adolfo Gaich equalized. A little before that, Rizespor professional Emir Han Topcu had also seen the yellow-red card (90th + 5).
