Anderlecht Secures Victory in 1/8th Finals of Croky Cup, Chaos in the Stands

Part one of the diptych between Anderlecht and Standard was completely purple-white. In the 1/8th finals of the Croky Cup, Anderlecht beat Standard 2-0. Stroeykens and again Dreyer scored the goals. Although the evening ended on a bad note when the Standard supporters pelted the Anderlecht fans with broken chairs.

Just past the hour mark, the ‘Ole’s’ rolled off the stands in Lotto Park, the match having already been played. Unlike a few weeks ago, Standard did not believe at any time that it could reverse a 2-0 deficit.

Mentally, Anderlecht seems to be a lot further along than the team that had a total blackout at Sclessin in mid-October. Stroeykens and Dreyer had given Anderlecht a double lead, Price was sent off. Lots of atmosphere in the first of two Clasicos in just four days. Fireworks around the stadium, more than an hour before the match and also a real cup atmosphere in the Lotto Park.

Both coaches gave their number two in goal a chance. Riemer chose Dupé, Hoefkens gave Henkinet playing minutes. Delaney immediately tested Henkinet in an aerial duel. The ball ended up at Anders Dreyer’s foot — that sentence has been the prelude to a goal in recent weeks anyway. Now the Dane shot the ball somewhat clumsily over the empty goal. The Dreyer moment was yet to come.

Anderlecht, still without Thorgan Hazard, but with Yari Verschaeren at the kick-off, took decisive control of the game. It claimed the ball and played football in the Rouches’ half. Standard only threatened when Dupé almost choked on a dribble. After a measured long ball over fifty meters from Sardella, Mario Stroeykens put Anderlecht at 1-0 with a devastating shot. The second Brussels goal followed shortly after halftime. Stroeykens and Dolberg prevented Fossey from playing football, but Dreyer finished in a controlled manner this time. Kawabe still hit the post, but after a red card for Price it was game over for the Rouches.

The atmosphere in the stands became grimmer. When some of the Liège supporters pelted the Anderlecht supporters with broken chairs, referee Van Driessche sent everyone inside.

Header Hayden

Desperate attempts by Standard. Djenepo throws the ball hard in front of goal where Hayden can head it, but Dupé has enough time to position himself for that attempt.

Ohio in the side net

A surprising attempt by the Dutchman. He kicks from a very sharp – read: impossible – angle into the side netting.

Players come out again

About ten minutes later the players come out again. It seems we’re going to play football again, if everyone keeps it civil. Standard resumes with a free kick.

In the meantime, red flares are also swinging from one box to another. And it keeps raining chairs. Dangerous and disgusting scenes in the Lotto Park…

Flying seats

The Standard fans express their dissatisfaction and break up Anderlecht’s away section. There are some chairs flying around here and there towards the Anderlecht box below them. Is that really necessary? Van Driessche stops the match for a moment.

Tap out

Anyone else interested? Anderlecht can easily pass the ball around in their own ranks, while Standard leaves the ball behind. When Ohio is able to break out, he loses the ball far too easily.

Foregone conclusion?

Standard must gradually start to improve if it wants to do anything about the deficit. They already have to score twice before extra time, and that’s where the problem lies. This season, the Rouches scored only 16 league goals in 16 games, as many as KV Mechelen. Only red lantern Kortrijk is doing worse.
