Alba Berlin Advances to Final Four in BBL Cup Tournament

The basketball players from Alba Berlin have once again reached the Final Four tournament in the BBL Cup. The Berliners won their quarter-final on Saturday at the Mitteldeutscher BC in Weißenfels with 85:70 (45:36). The best Berlin throwers were world champion Johannes Thiemann with 17 and Matt Thomas with 13 points.

Alba immediately went to work with commitment. It was clear to the Berliners that they wanted to make up for the 30-point defeat against MBC three weeks ago. The capital city team, with the recently injured Sterling Brown, Thomas and Louis Olinde back, defended very intensively and gave the MBC hardly any good opportunities to throw. Alba quickly pulled away and was already 20 points ahead at the end of the first quarter (29:9).

But the break came in the second quarter. The fresher MBC now defended more intensively and Alba was no longer able to do much offensively. The hosts, on the other hand, now scored better and fought their way back to five points (36:41). Even after the break it remained even.

The guests allowed the Weißenfelsers too many offensive rebounds and thus second chances to throw. It wasn’t until the end of the third period that Alba was able to gain some breathing room again (65:49). The MBC tried to come back with a lot of aggression, but the Berliners fought back and ultimately achieved the victory confidently in the hectic final quarter.

The Final Four will take place on February 17th and 18th. The venue is still open.
