Agustín Ruberto joins the ranks of Argentine World Cup top scorers

Agustín Ruberto was crowned as top scorer of the U17 World Cup which took place in Indonesia. In this context, the Argentine forward – who recently received the award – joined a select list of compatriots who also achieved the same milestone.

Guillermo Stábile (Mayor – Uruguay 1930): One of the first legends of the Argentine National Team, who led the Albiceleste until the final of the first World Cup, in which Francisco Olazar’s team fell 4-2 to the Celeste. Throughout the entire championship, the Sniper scored eight goals: 3 against Mexico (6-3), 2 against Chile (3-1), 2 against the United States in the semi (6-1) and one against Uruguay in the final. The podium was completed by José Pedro Cea (5) and Bert Patenaude (4).

Javier Saviola (U20 – Argentina 2001): El Conejo reached a superlative level in the country and remains the top scorer in the World Cup of the category in a single edition. He celebrated 11 times! They were: 3 to Egypt (7-1), 2 to Jamaica (5-1), 3 to France in 4th. (3-1), 2 to Paraguay in the semis (5-0) and 1 to Ghana in the final (3-0). Of course he won the Ballon d’Or. Adriano followed him on the list, with six shouts, the same amount as the Frenchman Djibril Cisse.

Lionel Messi (U20 – Netherlands 2005): Leo was very close to being the scorer of Qatar 2022. However, Kylian Mbappé’s three goals at the Lusail Stadium deprived him of the award. 17 years earlier, La Pulga had won it in the Under 20 World Cup. He scored six goals, spread throughout almost the entire competition: 1 against Egypt (2-0), 1 against Colombia in the 8th round. (2-1), 1 to Spain in the 4th. (3-1), 1 to Brazil in the semis (2-1) and 2 to Nigeria in the final (2-1). Like Saviola in 2001, he also won the Ballon d’Or. The Spanish Fernando Llorente and the Ukrainian Oleksandr Aliyev followed him, with five goals.

Sergio Aguero (U20 – Canada 2007): Kun had been part of Netherlands 2005, but Canada 2007 was its boom. He led the National Team to the two-time championship and the sixth in history. He won the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot, with six goals: 2 against Panama (6-0), 1 against North Korea (1-0), 2 against Poland in the 8th round. (3-1) and 1 to Czech Republic in the final (2-1). River’s 9 scored eight goals: 1 against Senegal (1-2), 1 against Japan (3-1), 1 against Poland (4-0), 2 against Venezuela in the 8th round. (5-0), and 3 to Germany, in the semis (3-3). He is the first Argentine to win the award in this category.
