This Tuesday, the AFA approved an important change regarding the registration of titles in Argentina: from now on, five championships that were considered national cups will now count as league titles. And the same will happen, from now on, with the League Cup.

The tournaments that are affected by this regulation are the Super League Cup that Tigre won in 2019, the Maradona Cup that had Boca as champion in 2020/21 and the League Cups that Colón, Xeneize and Rosario Central won in 2021, 2022 and 2023respectively.

Although these five tournaments change status, not all were played in the same way. That’s how each one was…

Rosario Central – League Cup 2023

El Canalla, who became champion last Saturday, was the one who asked the AFA that the title won be legislated as a league and not as a national cup. And the Rosario team needed to play 17 games to become championsa sum of matches very similar to the previous short tournaments, which had 19 dates.

The format of this tournament consisted of two zones of 14 teamsin which the members of each team played all against all in a single round, in addition to an interzonal match. The top four in each group advanced to the quarterfinals.where they faced each other in direct elimination matches.

Central gained access to the playoffs after finishing fourth in Group A and in the shootout they beat Racing (7-6 on penalties after a 2-2 tie), River (2-0 in the shootout after a 0- 0 in the 90′) and Platense 1-0 in the grand final.

Boca – League Cup 2022

Last year, Xeneize was left with a tournament that had exactly the same format as the current one. Boca won the title after finishing second in their group, which allowed them to access the direct elimination phase. There, they defeated Defensa y Justicia in the quarterfinals (2-0), Racing in the semifinals (6-5 on penalties after a 0-0 draw) and Tigre in the final (3-0).

Colón – League Cup 2021

The tournament in which Sabalero obtained the first title in its history was very similar to the previous two, although it had a small difference: 26 teams played it and not 28. This affected the number of matches that were played, since there were one less date in the group stage. Therefore, Colón was consecrated after playing 16 games and not 17, just as Boca and Rosario Central did.

On their way to the title, the Santa Fe team defeated Talleres on penalties (5-3) after drawing 1-1 in regulation time; They beat Independiente 2-0 and finally beat Racing 3-0 in the grand final. Previously, they had come out in first place in group A, above clubs such as Estudiantes (LP), River and San Lorenzo.

Boca – Maradona Cup 2020/21

Another of the tournaments that changes status is the Maradona Cupthe championship that was held between 2020 and 2021 and completed the calendar that the pandemic prevented from being played normally.

It had several peculiarities, since it was a tournament that only 24 teams played and that had two group stages. Firstly, the clubs were divided into six zones of four, where the members of each faced each other in a round-trip format. The first two in each group entered the Championship Phase, while the last two went on to play the Complementation Phase.

Then, the 12 classified for the Championship Phase were divided into two other zones of six teams each, where the members faced each other in a single match over five dates. The two teams that won each group met in the grand final, which ended with Boca as champion.

To reach the title, Xeneize first had to overcome a phase in which they faced Talleres, Newell’s and Lanús. And then, he won a group in which River, Argentinos, Arsenal, Independiente and Huracán also participated. Finally, defeated Banfield on penalties (5-3) in the definition after equalizing 1-1, which added a new star after 12 games played.

Tigre – Super League Cup 2019

An already relegated Matador made a big splash by getting its first star in the 2019 Super League Cup. This tournament is the most different from the rest, since it was played to direct elimination in round-trip keys.

There were 26 participating teams and it had the peculiarity that the teams that finished between first and sixth place in the 2019 Super League table started directly in the round of 16. On the other hand, the other 20 teams had to play an extra phase in kill-kill definitions.

In total, it had five phases: first round, round of 16, quarterfinals, semis and final. All of them had head-to-head duels with round-trip matches, except for the final, which was a single match.

Tigre shouted champion after beating Colón in the first round (3-2 overall), Unión in the 8th (4-3 overall), Racing in the 4th (3-2 overall), Atlético Tucumán in the semis (6-0 overall) and Boca 2-0 in the grand final. In total, the Matador had to play nine games.
