The 39-year-old from Umbertide remembered the hunting accident of January 27, 2008when due to an accidental gunshot, at just 23 years old, he lost his sight: “That day was a watershed between my life before and now. I was in the car on a dirt road and the blow hit me full in the face, and luckily the windshield muffled it, otherwise I wouldn’t have been here to talk about it.”
“Sight is the most important sense but it is also the one that is given the most importance” explained Michele, who without it sharpened all his other senses, managing to become – with his own strength and the help of those who always loved him – the first blind boy to graduate in physiotherapy (he also practices the profession) and a Paralympic Judo athlete.
Michele also told his story great passion for the mountains, where he climbs the peaks together with his childhood friend Daniele Caratelli: “A passion that I have always had as a child, when I saw the mountains as unattainable places. I’m not afraid of tackling climbs but I’m aware of my abilities. However, fear is human and must only serve to avoid further dangers. The greatest satisfaction is the journey, getting to the top makes me feel just like everyone else. The feeling of height and the silence of nature are indescribable…“
The host Ossini, who approached Michele to interact also by touch, joked with the Umbertide native, also recalling a phrase that the teachers addressed to him during his university period “Help us help you”.
