How are the countries divided in the draw?

Next year, 24 countries will be allowed to participate in Euro 2024, of which we already know 21. There are 4 pots in the draw, based on the results in the European Championship qualifications.

Belgium is the seed in pot 1 and will certainly avoid Portugal, France, Spain and England in the group stage. As host country, Germany is also in pot 1 and is already certain that it will end up in group A.

There are also 3 European Championship tickets that still have to be distributed to the winners of the play-offs in March. Those countries are in pot 4 in the draw.

The 24 countries are divided into 6 groups of 4 teams. The top 2 from each group advance to the 1/8th finals, followed by the 4 best third places.

How does the draw work?

The procedure for Saturday’s draw is simple. First, all countries from pot 1 are assigned to a group, then pot 2 and pot 3 and we end with pot 4.

The first country drawn from pot 1 ends up in group B (because Germany is in group A), the next country in group C and so on. The same pattern repeats for pots 2, 3 and 4.

In addition, there are 6 pots in the draw (A, B, C, D, E and F) to determine the position of each country in a group. Each pot contains 4 balls (e.g. B1, B2, B3 and B4). Only pot A contains only 3 balls, because position A1 has already been taken by host Germany.

Thanks to that position, we know immediately after Belgium has emerged where and when the Red Devils will play their matches.

What should (the fans of) the Red Devils hope for?

As a neighboring country, Germany is an interesting host country for the supporters of the Red Devils, because no fewer than 4 stadiums are a stone’s throw beyond the border: in Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen and Cologne.

That is why it is very interesting for Belgian fans if Belgium ends up in one of these positions: B1, B3, B4, C4, D4, F1, F2 and F3. The Red Devils will then play two matches near Belgium.

It is not the case that the Red Devils can use Tubize as a base, because every country is obliged to have a base camp in Germany. But for the fans, they are best-case scenarios.

So what is the worst scenario? Hopefully Belgium will not be linked to B2, C2, D2 or F4, because then Romelu Lukaku and co will not play once in the group stage in one of those 4 cities.

The dream scenario is already C4. If the Red Devils win their group, they will also play the 1/8th final and any quarter and semi-finals just across the border with Germany. In addition, the winner of Group C will compete against one of the best third places.

The group winners of B, C, E and F also have that advantage. Of course, that can also be disappointing. For example, at Euro 2020, Belgium met Portugal with the third place in the group of death, which also included France, Germany and Hungary.

Euro 2024 starts on June 14 with the opening match in Munich and concludes with the final on July 14 in Berlin. In addition to Munich and Berlin, the tournament will also be played in Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Cologne, Leipzig and Stuttgart.
