1. FC Köln Hit with Transfer Ban: The Future Looks Bleak

That’s it! 1. FC Köln can finally throw away their purchasing and transfer plans. The traditional club is not allowed to sign new players in winter or summer.

The verdict of the international sports tribunal CAS hits and paralyzes the FC with all its severity. Three months after the decisive hearing in Lausanne, on the Thursday before Christmas, the CAS confirmed the transfer ban originally imposed by FIFA at the end of March and recently only suspended for two transfer periods. A hammer!

No acquittal. No reduction in sentence. The FC announced on Thursday afternoon: “The International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) follows the FIFA Association of Arbitration Court (the so-called Dispute Resolution Chamber) and has confirmed its ruling in connection with the January 2022 signing of U19 player Jaka Cuber Potocnik, previously from Olimpija Ljubljana .”

For FC this means: Cologne can get any kind of reinforcement. A drama! After the completely botched transfer summer and the resulting crash in the first half of the season, sports boss Christian Keller (45) wanted to step up his game in January and bring in a striker, a six and a central defender in the fight to stay in the league (BILD reported).

Accordingly, Keller now says meekly: “We would have wished for and expected a different verdict. Accordingly, we are very disappointed that, despite numerous evidence to the contrary, the CAS classified Jaka Potocnik’s termination as not legally effective and at the same time did not see sufficient evidence that 1. FC Köln did not incite this termination.”

Was that already the relegation? The verdict at least dramatically reduces Cologne’s chances of rescue. Especially since FC has just separated from coach Steffen Baumgart (51). Especially offensively, Cologne (only 10 goals) lacks the necessary penetration. Keller’s weakly saved and poorly assembled squad offers nothing more than a brutal relegation battle.

Keller still tries to be optimistic: “We have always said that we have always taken the transfer ban scenario into account and will plan our squad accordingly until the end of the now fixed ban. The following applies: In every challenge there is always an opportunity. It is precisely with this attitude that we will look forward and tackle this challenge.”

how could it get so far?

Keller and Co. have to take a look at their own noses. Cologne’s bosses ultimately rejected any kind of out-of-court settlement from the start in order to settle the transfer dispute with the Slovenian club Ljubljana without FIFA and Cas. The FC saw itself in the right and naively assumed an acquittal until the end. Think!

The trouble began in January 2022. At that time, Slovenia’s top talent Jaka Cuber Potocnik (19) first terminated his contract with Ljubljana within two days and then signed with FC.

Ljubljana complained that the termination was not legally binding and accused the FC of having instigated Potocnik to breach the contract. Fifa agreed with the club in March and imposed a transfer ban on Cologne over two transfer periods, which was finally suspended in May due to the FC protests in front of the CAS.

Now she is active again. There is no chance of appeal. And Cologne is looking forward to a very dark future…
