Yuri Alvear: From Champion to Coach – The Transition and Reflections

If there is something difficult in sporting life, it is retirement. The satisfaction of obtaining a classification for a National, Pan American or Central American Games, a World Cup or an Olympic Games, and receiving a gold, silver or bronze medal in them, has no comparison and is something that not even money itself can buy. .

And that decision was made by Yuri Alvear Orejuela in 2021, an iconic athlete, national pride and with global recognition, which she earned with sacrifice, dedication and dedication, thanks to the bronze medal she won at the London Olympic Games. in 2012, to the silver medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, and to the medals obtained in Pan American and South American games and obtaining the title of Judo world champion three times in 2009, 2013 and 2014.

“Unfortunately due to an injury I could not be at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games, from that moment on I obviously took the step as a coach, since it was also one of my goals and objectives,” Alvear mentions.

For this daughter of Jamundí in the Valley, it has been a quite important change, “I like what I do, I enjoy it a lot, I think that it continues with the same intensity, adrenaline, that same tension that is experienced in the competition, but now from the barrier. Here I have to worry about all my students because they are well and obviously about sharing my knowledge and ensuring that they understand it in the best way.”

In that role as a coach and administrator in which she is now, not only because of her training as a professional in sports and physical activity, but because of her experience, she already has good mileage, in 2022 she worked as a coach for the Colombian National Team, He retired and came to Indervalle, he is also part of the sports commission of the International Judo Federation.

“I am also part of the Ambassadors of the Ministry of Sports, in which we are supervising and supporting the Sports Talent program, which I believe is very important to follow these generations that are gradually emerging, and to have that sports reserve.”

Precisely these young people who are starting out in sports are the ones that make Yuri Alvear reflect, because their future depends to a greater extent on the support of their parents so that they develop a love for the disciplines.

“I have always said that sport is a lifestyle, it changes society and I am a testimony of that. Sports opened doors for me, it allowed me to achieve many of my goals, including being a professional, becoming cultural, getting to know other countries and, obviously, the sporting achievements I obtained. So, I invite the children to practice sports and, more than the children, I invite the parents to be interested in taking them not only to obtain medals, but also, because sport helps to train and educate. to our kids”.
