Xeneize Fans Hold Peaceful Flag-Waving Event in Rio de Janeiro Ahead of Copa Libertadores Final

After the acts of violence against Boca Juniors fans on Thursday afternoon, which led to an emergency meeting between the authorities involved in the organization, Xeneize fans held a flag on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro in preparation for the final of the Copa Libertadores that will be played on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. at the Maracaná Stadium.

Flags, t-shirts and other blue and gold insignia could be seen very early, although the time formally scheduled for the flag-off was at 4 p.m. in the Buenos Aires Kiosque area of Copacabana. An hour before that time, the colors of Boca dominated the Brazilian beaches on a hot day, with a thermometer that exceeded 29°. It is estimated that 15 thousand people gathered at that place and continued the party into the night. Fortunately, everything was peaceful.

After the attacks suffered by the fans who were on the beaches of Rio on Thursday afternoon, the Ambassador of Argentina in Brazil, Daniel Scioli, spoke with the Arriba Argentinos program of El Trece where he commented on what the security operation would be like to prevent excesses in this flag.

“We are working on that. That the Fluminense fans do not have access to the space where the flag is held and the Police do guarantee that the space will not be invaded. The Banderazo is going to be in an area of Copacabana, they were now determining it, in one of the points. Today the Barra arrives to make a big splash. We hope that the Police guarantee the space so that what we saw yesterday does not happen again, that is, that the Fluminense fans want to go and carry out the smuggling. A whole journey is planned so that they can do it without coming to a confrontation,” said the official.

I would love to tell you that tomorrow is a day of great celebration, of great joy. We are going to have the Maracaná full of Brazilians, Argentines, Fluminense fans, Boca fans, and it is very important that we establish a climate of peace from today to tomorrow,” said the Flu president.

“Ask people to please respect their opponent, this is not a war, this is a very important thing, a football match. We love the Brazilian people very much and we want them to love us too.
