WTA Opposes Russian Exhibition Tournament, But No Penalties for Players Participating

The women’s tennis organization WTA does not support holding an exhibition tournament in Russia, but players who take part in an exhibition in Russia at the weekend do not have to fear any penalties.

Both players from the WTA Tour and players from the ATP Tour are invited to the second edition of the tournament from Friday to Sunday in St. Petersburg.

Familiar names announced

The event, sponsored by Russian energy giant Gazprom, takes place during Russia’s ongoing war of aggression in Ukraine. “Female players compete on the WTA Tour as independent contractors and have the opportunity to participate in an event during the off-season without penalty at their own discretion.”

Julia Putintseva (KAZ), Anastasia Potapova and Veronika Kudermetowa (both RUS) have announced their participation. The men’s rankings include world number 15. Karen Chatschanow, Roberto Bautista Agut (ESP) and Adrian Mannarino (FRA) were there. The ATP has not yet commented on this.
