It was expected, it’s now official. Double winner of the World Cup (2019 and 2023), South Africa’s third-row center Duane Vermeulen (76 caps) officially announced his retirement from playing on Wednesday at the age of 37.

“Duane will forever be regarded as one of the toughest men in South African rugby. He was not only a formidable force for the Springboks, but also a multi-faceted player who always gave his best,” commented Mark Alexander, President of the South African Rugby Union,

Having passed through Toulon between 2015 and 2018, the South African played in two Top 14 finals (2016 and 2017). During his career, he also won the South African Player of the Year twice (2014 and 2020).
