The French U-17 national team qualified for the quarter-finals 2023 U-17 World Cup after winning on penalties 5-3 (0-0) over Senegal at the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS), Wednesday (22/11).

The France vs Senegal duel in the first half was tough. Both teams displayed an attacking game. However, because each team defended solidly, it made it difficult for the opponents to create good opportunities.

This compact defense also caused both teams to make several errors with long passes.

In the first half France had two shots on target against Senegal. The first was through Fode Sylla which was thwarted by goalkeeper Serigne Diouf in the 21st minute.

Eight minutes later, an attempt from striker Mathis Lambourde was also saved without difficulty by goalkeeper Diouf.

Meanwhile, Senegal’s counterattack only resulted in a goal kick after Idrissa Gueye’s header in the 35th minute went off the left side of the French goal.

Clayton Diandy’s attempt in the 42nd minute with a left-footed shot from outside the penalty box was also blocked by the French defense.

Ismail Bouneb could have put France 10 ahead in the 45+3 minute if his right footed shot had not been blocked by Diouf.

In the second half both France and Senegal appeared more aggressive. Diandy’s left footed shot in the 48th minute was blocked by Argney.

Six minutes later Titi’s header was blocked by Diouf. Senegal was able to score a goal in the 58th minute through Diandy’s kick which took advantage of Gueye’s rebound which was pushed over by goalkeeper Argney.

However, the linesman raised the flag to indicate Diandy was in an offside position before the goal was scored.

Diandy wasted a golden opportunity for Senegal to take the lead in the 67th minute. Diandy was in a free position in the French penalty box after receiving Dieme’s cross. However, Diandy’s hard right-footed kick narrowly deviated to the right side of the opponent’s goal.

In the remainder of the match, Senegal and France could both attack into the opponent’s penalty box. But no additional goals were scored, so the match continued to a penalty shootout.

Captain Joachim Kayi Sanda gave France a 1-0 lead in the penalty shootout. Idrissa Gueye equalized for Senegal at 1-1.

France regained a 2-1 lead thanks to Yoram Zague’s execution. Daouda Diongu failed to equalize the score. Goalkeeper Argney parried Diongu’s kick, France still led 2-1.

Substitute Joan Tincres increased France’s lead to 3-1. Senegal reduced the deficit to 2-3 thanks to Pierre Dorival’s kick.

Bastien Meupiyou again kept France at arm’s length with a 4-2 lead. Senegal maintained the distance to 3-4, Goalkeeper Argney was able to parry Mamadou Savane’s shot, but the ball still went into the goal.

Nhoa Sangui was the decisive kicker for France’s victory. Sangui’s shot to the left side of the goal could not be thwarted by Diouf. France won 5-3 in a penalty shootout.

This victory took France through to the quarter-finals of the 2023 U-17 World Cup against Uzbekistan.
