Will the Blues overtake Argentina and finish the year at the top of the Fifa rankings?

After its historic victory against Gibraltar (14-0) on Saturday in Nice, France still has one last objective. The French could indeed end the year 2023 at the top of the Fifa rankings if they win in Greece, Tuesday evening, for their last qualifying match for Euro 2024. The Blues are already guaranteed to participate and the Since the Greeks can no longer qualify this way (they should have a catch-up session via play-offs in March), this data will constitute the main issue of this match.

France is currently second, behind Argentina, according to the latest update of the Fifa ranking established on October 26. But the first defeat of the Albiceleste since the 2022 World Cup against Uruguay (0-2) on Friday combined with the victory of the Blues on Saturday reverses this hierarchy (1878 points for France, 1844 for Argentina). This will be confirmed, whatever happens, in the event of a French victory in Greece, regardless of the result of the match between Brazil (3rd) and Argentina on Wednesday. The ranking will be updated at the end of this international window, at the end of November.

However, this anecdotal reward is not common for the Blues, who only finished the year at the top of the Fifa rankings once. It was in 2001, at the end of a year notably marked by a victory in the Confederations Cup.

In the women’s rankings dominated by Sweden, the French are currently 5th and ahead of Germany and the Netherlands.
