Among the most famous and delicious are: the Carmelitane, the Cerisane, the Marrone di San Donato, the Natalina, the Pallone Rossa, the Rossa Cicolana, the Rusellara and the Spatacciola.

1. Chestnuts in the province of Cosenza

The territory of Cosentino, with the Pollinothe Sila and the numerous hilly territories, is the main source of chestnuts in the entire region.
One of the areas with the most chestnut groves and where it is also possible to find many trees outside of private cultivations is certainly the one that includes the municipalities of San Sosti, Sant’Agata d’Esaro, Fagnano Castello and San Donato di Ninea.
They are towns with large hilly areas completely covered with chestnut trees and with land particularly suitable for their production. Walk in the woods and do trekking it’s particularly pleasant here, thanks also to the climate which rarely becomes harsh.
Other important areas for finding chestnuts in the province of Cosenza are the Sila municipalities of Spezzano della Sila and Pedace.

Collecting chestnuts in the province of Crotone is not as simple as in the territories of Cosenza and Catanzaro. However, it is possible to find a good amount of chestnut trees in the territories of the municipalities of Castel Silano, Petilia Policastro, San Nicola dell’Alto, Savelli and Mesoraca.

4. Chestnuts in the province of Reggio Calabria

Reggio Calabria is not a land rich in chestnut groves, especially for the very harsh nature of the terrain. Anyone who wants can still try excursions in the countryside of Cardato and Delianuova. And above all of Mammola, a town located on the Ionian side of Calabria, between Aspromonte and the Calabrian Serre: here an excellent quality of chestnuts is produced.
