The Horb Judo Club hosted Katharina Menz, vice world champion and bronze medalist in the team competition at the Tokyo Olympics, a top-class judo fighter.

Menz came to Horb at the invitation of the first chairman Kai Dahlhaus to hold two courses as part of an event weekend for the children and young people.

In the first course, the club’s young people and adults were taught current competition techniques in standing and on the floor by the top athlete.

After the first group, a second course followed, in which 34 girls and boys from the club were inspired by the small, wiry competitor Katharina Menz for competitive judo.

Children are allowed to hang medals around their necks

“The casual and friendly way in which the vice world champion captivated the children was impressive,” reports the club in its press release. At the end of the course, Menz showed the children the medals from their greatest successes: bronze medal from the European Championships in Prague 2020, bronze medal from the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2021 and the silver medal from the 2022 World Championships in Tashkent.

The children were also allowed to take these special medals into their own hands and hang them around their necks. If it doesn’t awaken Olympic dreams. Menz will be competing again at the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The children promised to keep their fingers crossed for her.

Overnight stay in the hall and morning exercise

After the course, the children began the second part of the event weekend, which youth leader Alexander Müller had planned together with other board members. First there was a visit to the Panorama-Bad Freudenstadt. After returning, it was time to “feed the predators” because everyone came back to the stadium with a big appetite. Afterwards there were games in which the children could collect points and win prizes in small groups.

After spending the night in the hall, we continued the next morning with morning exercise together and a delicious breakfast. This was followed by another training session in judo, in which the content of the previous day’s course was repeated and deepened.

Much praise for supporters and helpers in the “mammoth task”

“This extraordinary event weekend for children and young people was actively supported by the Kipp company from Bergfelden and the Straubs Krone restaurant from Bildechingen. A big thank you also goes to the youth speaker Alexander Müller and all the parents and coaches who actively supported him in a variety of ways with this mammoth task and thus made the event weekend a success,” the club writes in conclusion.
