Since his good years with the Nuggets or the Clippers, Danilo Gallinari is much less in the light. But the 35-year-old veteran, who is coming off a white season after his anterior cruciate knee ligament operation, is still there.
After his missed opportunity with the Celtics, the power forward brings a little juice to the Wizards, from their bench. In less than 15 minutes, he is still averaging 9 points (52% on shots).
Even if on a collective level, this season does not have much interest for him compared to his former teams, the Italian at least appreciates the fact of finding leaders (Michael Winger, Will Dawkins or Wes Unseld Jr. who was an assistant with the Nuggets) for whom he has already played in the past.
« It’s always great to have the opportunity to work with people you’ve already worked with and know very well. The transition is better and faster. They have been great with me in this transition from Boston to Washington. Rehab was a crucial time this summer where I had to keep working, and they were great. I am very happy to work with them “, recalls the 35-year-old.
He’s thinking about the Olympics
And happy to find the parquet floors again. Before returning this season, he had not put on an NBA jersey since the 2022 playoffs with the Hawks. Some, given his age, could have imagined him thinking about retirement. But this does not seem to be current.
« As long as I have the legs, I want to play. When you love basketball that much, you want to play until you’re 70, but of course the legs won’t be there anymore. As long as my legs are there, my mind will always be ready to play and be competitive. I just need my legs and everything will be fine
», insists the Italian.
The latter considers that he still has enough under the hood to join his national team, with which he had to withdraw from the World Cup, for the Paris Olympic Games.
« Yes of course. I have never said no to the national team and I will never say no. I am always available in any role they need in the field », assures Danilo Gallinari who regrets that his team, 8th in the competition, had to face “Team USA” in the quarter-final. And who will therefore have to go through an Olympic Qualification Tournament in order to be able to compete in the next Olympics.
