Venezuela to Hold Mock Vote for National Consultative Referendum on Dispute with Guyana

CARACAS, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) — Venezuela will carry out a mock vote on November 19, as part of the preparations for the national consultative referendum on the territory in dispute with Guyana scheduled for December 3, reported today Friday the president of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Elvis Amoroso.

The president of the CNE detailed in a speech to the press that the simulation aims to familiarize the Venezuelan population with the voting system that will be used in the referendum on December 3.

Amoroso pointed out that for the simulation they will have 485 electoral centers for 1,000 voting stations throughout Venezuelan territory.

He indicated that the electoral authorities will hold meetings in the coming days with representatives of political parties, unions, clubs and associations so that they have clear information about the process.

The referendum scheduled for December 3 is an initiative of the National Assembly (Parliament) to consult on the territory of more than 150,000 square kilometers that Venezuela claims from Guyana, given the intensification of the border debate with the Guyanese government.

The Government of Venezuela is in favor of advancing bilateral dialogue on the dispute, through the so-called Geneva Agreement of 1966, which is based on a peaceful and practical solution to the conflict.

In turn, the Government of Guyana took the case to the International Court of Justice so that the organization could resolve the dispute.
