Third round of the Europe Cup for Itelyum Varese, which hosted BC Tsu Tbilisi at the Itelyum Arena. A one-way challenge, already closed in the first quarter, with the Lombards thus achieving their second victory in the Old Continent.

The home team immediately started strong, with triples from Davide Moretti and Olivier Hanlan making it 10-2 after two and a half minutes. Then McDermott scores the double-digit lead and Gabe Brown’s basket from beyond the arc is worth +13. Tbilisi tries a reaction, returning to a single-digit deficit, but it’s only a flash, because then another triple from Moretti relaunches Varese’s escape. Another shot from far away, this time from Willie Cauley-Stein, then Hanlan scores and +15 for the home team. Very high percentages from beyond the arc for Varese, a I score again with Brown and Itelyum runs away and ends the first quarter ahead 37-16.

The score doesn’t change in the second quarter, with Varese reaching +25 after 1’30” and the match virtually in the freezer for the Lombards. Davide Moretti was excellent, again scoring from beyond the arc, but it was all of Varese who managed the advantage as best they could and, little by little, widened the gap even further against Tbilisi. The Georgians, at the mercy of the hosts, are unable to react Varese continues to dominate on the parquet and with a second quarter of +17 and we go to halftime at 71-33.

A match that now seems to be in the icebox, but Varese doesn’t come out of the locker room and the third quarter is a nightmare for the home team. A run of 0-13 puts Tbilisi back at least virtually in the game, but it’s the entire third period that sees Varese suffer in attack, with only 6 points scored in the first 6 minutes of the quarter and the Georgians suddenly finding themselves at -21 from -38 . At the end of the quarter Varese limits the damage, which so he goes to the last stop still clearly ahead 88-64.

At the beginning of the last quarter, Tbilisi tried their last outburst to really reopen a match that was still in the hands of Varese, but the Lombards responded and, after an initial score of 2-8, regained the right advantage and were able to manage the last minutes of the match.
