Vanderbilt Football Looks to Salvage SEC Win Against Auburn in Critical Matchup at FirstBank Stadium

Vanderbilt football has three more chances to salvage an SEC win out of an otherwise disastrous 2023 season. Of those, only Saturday’s game against Auburn is at FirstBank Stadium.

The Commodores (2-7, 0-5 SEC) will hold both homecoming and Senior Day on Saturday when they take on Auburn (4-4, 1-4).

Vanderbilt still will be without linebacker/safety CJ Taylor, as well as defensive lineman Yilanan Ouattara and safety Savion Riley. Quarterback AJ Swann is questionable, while coach Clark Lea said that he plans to play both Ken Seals and Walter Taylor at quarterback. Auburn is likely to play two quarterbacks as well with Payton Thorne and Robby Ashford.

Auburn has struggled this season, with its lone conference win coming against Mississippi State. The Tigers have a multifaceted rushing attack and force a lot of turnovers, but they have struggled throwing the football.

First quarter

Auburn 7, Vanderbilt 0: Jarquez Hunter 67-yard run

After Jacob Borcila missed a field goal on Vanderbilt’s opening drive, top Auburn running back Jarquez Hunter was nearly untouched in a 67-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers an early lead.

Injury updates

CJ Taylor and Quincy Skinner Jr. were among the players not dressed as warmups commenced. Clark Lea had previously ruled Taylor out Thursday, while Skinner had been listed as questionable.

Will Sheppard and AJ Swann were both dressed. Sheppard left the Ole Miss game early and was non-contact in practice due to a rib injury. Swann did not dress for the Ole Miss game and is dressed this week amid an elbow injury, but it is unclear whether he will play.

Ken Seals to start

Ken Seals was announced as the starting quarterback in the stadium and took first-team reps in warmups, making it likely that he would start.

Lea has previously said that both Seals and Walter Taylor will play.
