Unraveling Club Brugge’s Identity Crisis: Lack of Mentality and Leadership

An insight into Club Brugge’s identity crisis. The Extra Time panel considered the question on everyone’s mind: how a core with so much quality can perform so poorly. “It seems as if they don’t care much,” Gert Verheyen describes a dangerous perception problem. But appearances are deceiving, right? Or is there more going on?

It is difficult to put your finger on the wound at Club Brugge.

The Blue-Black selection is packed with talent, but the results are lacking. And Club’s game is anything but sparkling. This weekend it was blown away by a Union that showed much more intensity.

A painful observation that Simon Mignolet also expressed after the 2-1 defeat: “Players have to make sure they hold their own and are not dismissed as little children. When you come to Union, you have to be a man.”

If there’s one thing Club supporters are allergic to, it’s that resigned attitude.

Gert Verheyen

Clear language from the goalkeeper, who openly criticized the lack of mentality of his teammates. But he is certainly not the only one who shares that opinion.

“Look at men like Skov Olsen, they can play football so well, but they still have to show more when things get difficult in such a match. And I also have the same feeling with Nusa: it seems as if they don’t care so much at that moment. could care,” Gert Verheyen also outlined the situation in Extra Time.

“I’m not saying that it is actually that way, but it is an appearance through the body language they show,” he added nuance.

It seems to be no coincidence that the grumbling and whistling in the stands at Club Brugge has become increasingly louder in recent weeks.

“The supporters also pick up on that. And if there is one thing that Club supporters are allergic to, it is that resigned attitude. Because it is actually not that difficult to show that you really want to make an effort.”

A perception problem, or is there more to it?

“How many of those real over-my-dead types does Club Brugge still have? Not many, right? The profiles of your players are also very important,” Verheyen continues.

In that respect, Deila Balanta – who is more of a booster – was clearly trying to reintegrate into the team.

“But I had to laugh at that,” says Verheyen. “They had written him off for a long time, but he has to become the savior of this Club again.”

And he is not the only write-off who is back in the starting line-up at Club, notes Filip Joos. Odoi and even Nielsen also belong to that category.

“There are simply too few leaders in that team,” concludes Verheyen.
