Union Berlin’s Crisis Continues: Twelfth Consecutive Defeat and Calls for Coach Urs Fischer to Stay

The crisis is getting worse…

Union Berlin lost 3-0 to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Alte Försterei. For the Iron Men, the defeat means their twelfth competitive defeat in a row.

Instead of blaming coaches, players and managers for the dramatic decline, some Union fans insult journalists and show a poster: “We don’t care what the press pigs write. Urs Fischer is a Unioner and should stay that way!”.

The sporting facts do not speak at all in favor of the coach, who stormed into the Champions League with the club last season: Urs Fischer (57) sets a historical negative record with his team: only Stefan Leitl (46 / Hannover) with Greuther Fürth in the 2021/22 season.

Fischer can still continue to lose – at least on Wednesday (6.45 p.m.) in the Champions League in Naples and on November 12th (3.30 p.m.) in the Bundesliga in the away game against Bundesliga leaders Leverkusen. After that there is an international break. A change of coach would only be conceivable then, if at all.

Fischer at Sky: “The team tries and does everything. At the end we don’t reward ourselves. We said that we wanted to walk this rocky, arduous path together. Now it has begun. We are in a relegation battle.”

Before the game, the Unioners are given a special shout-out by the fans. Coach Fischer is also celebrated with chants. But that doesn’t help either.

Fischer about the fans, the team and coaches celebrated throughout: “Great. But it describes the cohesion of Union. It’s not just told, it’s also lived.”

Frankfurt used its first two shots on goal to score two goals. After a Chaibi free kick was initially blocked, Marmoush scores with an ice-cold right-foot shot from around 15 meters to make it 1-0 for Frankfurt (2nd). Larsson crosses low into the middle after a long ball from Tuta, Marmoush slides in to make it 2-0 (14th).

Union’s first sign of life: Fofana hits the crossbar with his head after Trimmel’s cross (19′). Despite 5:3 shots on goal and 6:1 corners for Union, the score is 0:2 at the break.

Behrens (57′) misses the first chance of the second half, Trapp deflects Fofana’s shot around the post (59′). Joker Nacho Ferri scores on an assist from Götze from close range to make it 3-0 for Frankfurt (82nd), thus putting the lid on it.

Before the game, President Dirk Zingler (59) answered the question in the program as to who could get the team back on track: “Urs Fischer. And not out of gratitude for his achievements in the past, but because we are convinced that he is an excellent coach who can solve this difficult task.”

A clear statement of trust that still stands even after the bankruptcy against Frankfurt.
