Ugo Humbert Triumphs at Metz Tournament on Home Soil

French No.1 Ugo Humbert (23rd) won the Metz tournament, on his home soil, by dominating Russian Alexander Shevchenko, 63rd in the world, on Saturday (6-3, 6-3), to win the fourth title of his career, which will allow him to enter the Top 20 at the ATP on Monday. The 25-year-old Messin confirmed his excellent end to the year by winning his first final of a tournament at this level (ATP 250) this season.

On his land, Ugo Humbert raised his voice throughout the week. After working against Dominic Thiem (7-6, 4-6, 6-3) and Lucas Van Assche (4-6, 6-3, 7-5), the Mosellan did not drop any more sets. And its finale illustrated this rise in power. Imperial in service (three points lost in the first set) and very solid on the return, he left no hope this Saturday for Alexander Shevchenko, a novice at this level. His aggressiveness was rewarded by a clear and clear victory in 1 hour and 7 minutes in front of his audience.

With this fourth career title – the first since Halle in 2021 -, Ugo Humbert gives himself a little gift: he is guaranteed to end the year as world number 1. Better yet: Messin will enter the Top 20 on Monday (20th), which will be a first for him. No Frenchman had reached such a rank since veteran Gaël Monfils in August 2022. It is all the more spectacular for Messin as he started the year beyond 80th place, before starting his rise in spring. A great way to end 2023.
