two men die after running a sailboat against the rocks

BarcelonaTwo men of French nationality aged between 70 and 80 have died in a tragic boating accident in Port de la Selva. In the morning, his sailboat collided with a group of rocks at Cap de Bol, a steep area between Port de la Selva and Llançà. They themselves sent an SOS by radio at 00:41, but when emergency crews arrived they found their lifeless bodies floating in the water, after the boat was completely stuck between the rocks. Firefighters and members of the Medical Emergency System have performed resuscitation exercises on them without success.

The Civil Guard has taken over the investigation. It is planned that in the next few hours a team of divers will carry out a visual inspection of the remains of the sailboat to collect evidence and be able to speak with more certainty about what could have happened. By now, one of the hypotheses, according to sources consulted by the ARA, is that the boat was moored in the Llançà area and the anchor had broken. It was a night of north wind and strong waves. This, according to early investigations, could have dragged the sailboat onto the rocks. The victims would have sent the message by radio when they had already collided and the ship was sinking.

However, all hypotheses remain open and it cannot be ruled out that at the time of the accident they were sailing and did not see the steep head of Bol. Although the victims have already been identified, it is still unknown what they were doing on the Costa Brava and since when they were there and the Civil Guard has already contacted the French police to try to clarify it. They have also asked their French counterparts to contact the relatives.

At 5.30 in the morning, the dead bodies were lifted. A Maritime Rescue helicopter has collected the corpses from the water, a task that has not been easy due to the strong north wind. It is expected to continue blowing in the next few hours and this could complicate the investigation at the scene.
