Turkey’s Tugce Beder Refuses to Shake Hands with Israeli Opponent at European Judo Championships

At the European Judo Championships in Montpellier, Turkey’s Tugce Beder refused to shake hands with her Israeli opponent Tamar Malca. After the duel in the 48 kg class, which Malca won on Friday, she approached her opponent with an outstretched hand. She didn’t return the traditional gesture and turned away.

Anti-Semitic incidents are not new in judo. The Algerian Fethi Nourine, for example, decided not to take part in the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo in order to avoid a possible second-round duel against the Israeli Tohar Butbul. Nourine was subsequently banned for ten years by the World Judo Federation IJF. The IJF initially did not comment on the incident between Beder and Malca (both 23).

During the European Judo Championships, security precautions around the Israeli team were increased again, reported the southern French newspaper Midi Libre.
