TSG Hoffenheim’s exceptional status is a thing of the past. On December 18, 2014, the DFL and a little later the DFB granted TSG an exemption from the so-called 50+1 rule, which states that the majority of voting rights remains with the parent club. The basis was the considerable financial commitment of club patron Dietmar Hopp to his home club and to professional and amateur football as well as popular sports, which had already lasted for more than 20 years.

After almost ten years, the now 83-year-old decided to change course and initiated the return of his majority of voting rights. The final formalities were completed these days, and after the approval of the tax authorities, the DFL accepted the now amended shareholders’ agreement.

“I know that the 50+1 rule is a valuable asset in German football”

“I am relieved that all the requirements have now been met and the changes have been made. This marks the end of a chapter in TSG’s history, which has largely brought distrust and hostility to the club and me. I know that the 50+1 rule, which I have always supported and in whose spirit I have always acted, represents a valuable asset in German football,” says Dietmar Hopp. “I would like to thank everyone who has now made sure to restore the original condition.”

On June 12th of this year, the general meeting of TSG Hoffenheim eV cleared the way with a large majority to fulfill Dietmar Hopp’s wish and transfer his majority of the voting rights in TSG GmbH to TSG eV.

This means that all relevant personnel and financial decisions again require the blessing of the club. “The club and Dietmar Hopp have always acted hand in hand in accordance with the 50+1 regulations. Nothing will change. Dietmar knows that the future of TSG is in the best of hands and that we will not only preserve his legacy, but develop it further.” said TSG chairman Kristian Baumgärtner, reminding us that “the TSG is primarily about training young people, both athletically and personally.” The infrastructure that has been used for this purpose for many decades is solely due to the commitment of Dietmar Hopp.
