Top scorer in Ligue 1: Mbappé crowned even in case of tie with Lacazette

This is perhaps the only issue of this last day of Ligue 1 for PSG, already crowned champion, and Lyon, who can no longer aim for better than a worthless 6th place: who will go on vacation Saturday evening with the title of top scorer in Ligue 1 in your pocket?

Two players are currently battling it out at the top of this ranking: Kylian Mbappé, crowned best player in the championship last Sunday (28 goals), and Alexandre Lacazette, who is only one length behind (27). Both are in sparkling form at the end of the championship, the first having scored 9 goals in the last 8 matches, the second 10.

Ties broken by number of penalties, then assists

Opposed to Clermont (8th) and Nice (9th), the Parisian and the Lyonnais will undoubtedly have this last trophy in mind to collect. Mbappé, who also still has a few records to break, will however know that he can afford to score one goal less than his pursuer this Saturday evening, and for good reason: even in the event of a tie, it is him which will be sacred.

According to the LFP regulations, the first tie-breaking point in the event of a tie is the number of penalties scored on the total goals. Lacazette has 6, Mbappé… 2. In the crazy event where Mbappé scores 4 penalties and Lacazette 5 “classic” goals, resetting the counters to zero, the second criterion is the number of assists. Here again, the Parisian (6) dominates the Lyonnais (5). Lacazette would then have to deliver, in addition, an assist for the third criterion to give him the advantage: the number of matches during which his goals have been scored (22 for the Lyonnais currently, 19 for Mbappé).

Already a tie for Mbappé in 2020

It would not be the first time that Mbappé, who has the opportunity to win this championship top scorer trophy for the 5th year in a row, finishes tied with a competitor. In 2019-2020, a season shortened by Covid, the Bondynois and the Monegasque Wissam Ben Yedder each scored 18 goals, and it was already in the number of penalties (3 to 0) that Mbappé had predominated.

“I think, on the other hand, that Wissam also deserves a trophy, as was done in the Premier League last season to reward his year,” the Parisian tweeted at the time. In England indeed, in the event of a tie at the top of the scorers’ ranking, several trophies are awarded. During the season that Mbappé mentioned, three players shared the title.
