Former PSG captain, Thiago Silva once again regretted the departure of Neymar, which occurred last summer. The Brazilian defender indicates that his compatriot dreamed of winning the Champions League with the Parisian club.
Thiago Silva and Neymar shared the same jersey for three seasons, between 2017 and 2020, at PSG. Having left at the end of a Champions League final lost against Bayern Munich, the former Parisian captain finally won the European Grail with Chelsea in 2021. For his part, the ex-Barça player left the League 1 last summer, joining Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.
“Neymar would certainly have liked to stay. Winning the Champions League was his dream,” said Thiago Silva about his Brazilian compatriot, in comments transcribed by the Parisian. Last October, Neymar suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament in his left knee, enough to put an end to his season. As a reminder, PSG let him go for 90 million euros.
Winner of the Champions League in 2015 with FC Barcelona, Neymar failed to win the competition with PSG. Just like Thiago Silva. “My dream, like Neymar, Marquinhos and Verratti, was to win the Champions League, I can tell you,” said the man who arrived at PSG in 2012. “Marquinhos still has chances, but with PSG, it’s over for us.”
“At PSG, we took one step forward then three steps back”
In recent days, Thiago Silva had already criticized the Parisian management in an interview with the Guardian. “Nothing happens overnight. You’re not going to achieve everything just because you have a lot of money,” the 39-year-old commented on PSG’s European performances. “That’s not how football works. If you don’t have a clear plan of what you want, things won’t work.”
“Normally, even a failure allows you to progress, said Thiago Silva this time. We take one step back then two forwards. It wasn’t like that at PSG: we took one step forward then three steps back. It was really very difficult. The pressure was too much.”
In recent weeks, Thiago Silva had already liked a message on social networks which castigated the big cleaning carried out last summer, notably with the departures of Neymar and Marco Verratti. For his part, the veteran still plays at Chelsea, where he remains an important element of the squad under the orders of Mauricio Pochettino.
