BarcelonaCatalunya has 9,255 foreign companies installed in its territory, which represents a new historical record, after growing by 100 companies compared to the previous year. Thus, the number of multinationals in Catalan territory has grown by 1% annually, while compared to ten years ago, the increase is 62%.

International companies have increased their representation in total employment in Catalonia to 20%, while they account for 1.4% of the total number of companies and 31.6% of business volume. The most prominent foreign investments this year have been those of Rovio, AstraZeneca, Lufthansa, Galderma and Arxada. The report states that one in four companies has established itself in Catalonia in the last five years

These are data from the directory of subsidiaries of foreign companies in Catalonia prepared by Acció and presented this Wednesday by the president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, and the Minister for Business and Knowledge, Roger Torrent. They did so at the Passeu 2023 event, which was attended by hundreds of managers of foreign multinationals established in Catalonia.

The United States, booming

The most common countries of origin for foreign companies established in Catalonia are the United States and France, with a representation of 15% and 14% of the total, respectively. Behind are Germany (12%), the United Kingdom (10%) and Italy (8%).

The truth is that the United States not only leads the ranking, but also tops the list of fastest growing countries, with a year-on-year increase of 15%. They are followed by Japan (12%) and Singapore (8%). The multinationals based in Catalonia come from 90 countries.

The study also includes the main sectors of activity of these companies and concludes that the foreign subsidiaries located in Catalonia are dedicated to the automotive industry (16%), food (14%), chemistry (12%), the pharmaceutical industry (7.5%) and information and communication technologies (4%). 60% of the companies are in Barcelonès.

The latest report, also presented at a similar event by President Aragonès at the Palau de la Generalitat, showed a 2.8% increase compared to 2019, the year before the pandemic, when they were last counted. All of them had a total turnover of 236,000 million euros at the time. The Government has been working for some time with a portfolio of 600 projects by foreign companies that can potentially invest in Catalonia, 55% of which are industrial projects.
