The CDM Triángulo de Oro kicked off the 14th edition of the #TorneoFLL. After several years in the Canal de Isabel II pavilion, for this edition the space has been changed but the solidarity character is maintained. “We are proud to be able to offer these newly remodeled facilities. From the moment the Foundation contacted us, our objective was to put at their disposal all the means we had at our disposal to promote the values of sport and “the youth in this solidarity event. We are sure that this tournament is going to be a success.”said Pedro Guitart, coordinator of the District Council of Tetuán.

“It is a pavilion that we already knew but, after the remodeling, it has become a fantastic facility, with lots of light”added Santos Moraga. The president of the Madrid Basketball Federation wanted to put the focus on young people, the first-year cadets who will participate in the tournament. A tournament that stars such as Domantas Sabonis (first MVP and now in Sacramento Kings), Luka Doncic (Dallas Mavericks reference) or Usman Garuba, currently in Golden State Warriors, have gone through. Without forgetting Carlos Alocén, Héctor Alderete or Izan Almansa, among others. “During the week all participants receive talks, and, although they are not of an age to donate, they do become aware of the importance of donation. It is going to be a solidarity and very competitive tournament”, explained the president of the FBM. He also thanked the participating clubs and highlighted that the greatest satisfaction comes at the end, when they finish playing. “When I see them leaving happy I am very satisfied,” he claimed.

Diego Cobo, deputy director of the Transfusion Center of the Community of Madrid, was along the same lines, addressing the importance of the event: “Bone marrow transplant is the only possible solution for people who suffer from leukemia or other hematological diseases. It is a championship that transcends the fields for hope and solidarity”. One of the great objectives of the tournament is to find more donors to save lives. “Three out of four patients who need a bone marrow transplant do not have it. Bone marrow donation is one of the most direct ways to increase the chances of a compatible donor anywhere in the world”, assured Diego Cobo. Although the data is good (5,300 new donors last year and almost 65,000 in total registered in the Community of Madrid), everyone’s role is fundamental. “I would like to encourage players and spectators not only to enjoy basketball, but also to be heroes in real life. May this tournament not only be remembered for the baskets scored, but also for the hope and life that together we are building by donating bone marrow”he concluded.

Finally, Nieves Cuenca, general coordinator of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation, took the floor, thanking the help of collaborators (FBM, Transfusion Center, ONT, Basket CanteraTV…), participating clubs and sponsoring companies in an event “so that all those people who may need us know that we are at their side”. Nieves Cuenca explained the impact of being diagnosed with an oncohematological disease: “All the foundations of your life shake. You think about death. You want to continue living.” Hence the importance of caring for patients and their families, with improvements in research, but above all, with the help of everyone, “humanizing their environment, seeking to improve their quality of life“. Therefore, this weekend the baskets will have a fundamental value. “We invite everyone to be part of the great #TeamMédula and enjoy this great basketball party for life”.

In this 14th edition, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation Tournament has ten teams, six men’s (Real Madrid, Valencia Basket, Barcelona, Saltium Alcorcón Basket, Baloncesto Fuenlabrada and the Madrid children’s team) and four women’s teams (Movistar Estudiantes, Real Canoe, Rivas Parque Sureste and the Madrid team). On the last weekend of November, the Triangle will be filled with basketball, hope and solidarity. All matches can be seen live on FBMTV and Basket Cantera TV.
