The dominance of the United States in women’s basketball at the Olympic Games
In the next edition the United States again won the gold, but the Soviets returned to the scene in Barcelona 1992, this time as a Unified Team, and they took first place. That was the last time that a team other than the United States stood on top of the podium in the women’s basketball competition at the Olympic Games.
From Atlanta 1996 until Tokio 2020the United States has achieved seven consecutive golds. Among the countries that stand out among the silver medals is the Australian women’s team (3 silver and 2 bronze) as well as France and the People’s Republic of China (1 silver and 1 bronze each). The only Latin country that has managed to reach the women’s basketball podiums at the Olympic Games is Brazil (1 silver and 1 bronze).
