The squash Czech Open starts in Brno, Serme returns after a maternity break

“The tournament has an even higher subsidy than last year. If we increased the prize money by twenty thousand dollars, we would already be part of the World Tour. We would like to strive for this in the future, for example with a glass court somewhere in a shopping center,” said Roman Švec from the organizing club Squash Viktoria Brno in a press release.

The main Czech hopes will be Martin Švec, Daniel Mekbib and Jakub Solnický. Viktor Byrtus or Ondřej Vorlíček will also perform in Brno. “Nothing easy awaits them. It will be a success if three players appear in the second round,” noted Švec.

Among the foreign stars, in addition to the reigning champion and fifteenth player in the world ranking Müller, the Englishmen Patrick Rooney and Declan James, i.e. squash players who were also in the top twenty in the world, will also start.

Among the women, Tamara Holzbauerová, Riana Alexová or Karolína Šrámková from the Czech Republic will present themselves. The attraction will be the participation of four-time national champion Anna Serme, who is returning after a maternity break. The women’s tournament has a subsidy of 9 thousand dollars.

“It would be good if it was played a little later, but it’s in the Czech Republic and I could use my ranking position before the pregnancy. I see a shift in every training session. I’ll play, I don’t expect a life form. For now, it’s still true that I mainly want to survive the match,” said Serme.

The organizers also want to take advantage of the increased interest after squash was newly included in the program of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Funding and membership will increase. It’s amazing news for us, we didn’t hope for it even after all these years,” added Švec.
