Saisei Technical High School’s “Kobe Athlete Base” is located on a hill in Kita Ward, Kobe City, overlooking the city of Kobe.

The facility is home to fields for athletic clubs such as the soccer, rugby, and tennis clubs, and also includes a vast baseball field with 100m long wings and 122m center field made of the same black clay as Koshien, as well as an indoor practice field.

“The dormitory will be completed around February next year. We are truly grateful to have such facilities available.”

The voice of manager Toru Hirata, who looked at the building under construction on the left field side of the baseball field, overlapped with the sound of the strong autumn wind that occasionally blew.

“Kobe is very easy to live in. There’s a lot of greenery, and it’s close to the mountains and the sea. It’s a big city, and it’s easy to go everywhere.”

Explain the current situation in a relaxed tone. He was appointed to Murano Kogyo (at that time) as a baseball club advisor in April 2012, and was appointed baseball club manager in July of the same year.

Participated in Koshien consecutively as the coach of prestigious Yokohama High School…

Coach Hirata is an alumnus of Yokohama High School, and after graduating from university, he worked as a coach, then became the manager in 2010, and has been the manager since 2015.

Although he led his alma mater to the summer Koshien tournament for three consecutive years starting in 2016, he was dismissed as coach in September 2019 after being accused of power harassment.

About two and a half years later, Director Hirata reveals how he returned to the field.

“My classmate from Yokohama High School was Kensuke Matsuura, who went on to JR East from Hodai University, and while he was in college, he served as an assistant coach, and now he is Hideki Tanaka, the general manager of the Saisei Polytechnic Baseball Club. After I was dismissed from Yokohama High School, Matsuura was keen to get me back into high school baseball, and I was able to connect with General Manager Tanaka, who I had a mentor-student relationship with during my college days. That’s when Murano Technical High School approached me because they wanted to strengthen their baseball club.”

Of course, he suffered psychological damage immediately after being dismissed as the coach of his alma mater. But while he was away from the field, he used the time to reflect on himself.

“I stopped and re-learned, organized, and analyzed my past experiences. It may be strange to call it systematization, but if you’re standing on the job site all the time, you’ll stop and examine things. I didn’t have much time to look back and reflect. I was able to take time to think about things like that.”
