While still at school, Tommy Hilfiger began a career in business. He opened a small store in Elmira, in the state of New York, where he sold jeans and bell bottoms that he found and customized himself. He naturally takes up styling to meet the expectations of his clients. Self-taught, he decided to launch his first collection under the Tommy Hilfiger brand in 1985, in New York. With its clothing line for men first, followed by lines for women and children, accessories and shoes, a wind of modernity is blowing over traditional American ready-to-wear. Omnipresent and all-powerful, Tommy Hilfiger opened a youth foundation in 1995 and was named stylist of the year by the Parsons School of Design in New York in 1998.
