In the aftermath of a championship victory that had been awaited for over a month, the fifth episode of L’Ultima Contesa, VareseNoi’s talk show on home basketball, aired.
The guest of the episode was the president of Pallacanestro Varese, Toto Bulgheroni, with whom we spoke about the team’s moment and the ongoing issue with the Australian fund led by Ross Pelligra. Another guest of the episode was Antonio Franzi, journalist among others from La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Here are some of Toto Bulgheroni’s statements:
On the team: «We had some vicissitudes from the beginning, from the resignation of coach Brase to the inability to retain some players from last year, and this posed difficulties in building the team. I have enormous faith in Luis Scola, I completely support his project, and this is the reason why I agreed to commit myself to being the president of the company.”
«When you start from scratch it’s not easy to reach the point where you were last year. The most important thing is that Luis has signed multi-year contracts with the players, which means that we can work calmly. I understand that it’s difficult at the beginning, but I have great faith in the coach and technical staff and in all the work they do.”
«We certainly have one of the most basic budgets in Serie A. We were in the match against Tortona which has a budget 4 or 5 times higher than ours, we lost against Trento due to a sensational refereeing error… The team has shown that the desire is there to be together and play together. I have a lot of confidence for several reasons: Shahid needs some time, he comes from a lower league and knows how to jump man; then we have at least 3 or 4 full-backs of great value. Ulaneo’s return was very important, because it allows Cauley-Stein to breathe and doesn’t force the coach to let Brown play out of position.”
On Cauley-Stein: «Cauley-Stein is a player who if he had a different character we wouldn’t see in Varese. He is a very delicate boy, very sensitive and who slowly seeks his motivation. You can’t ask him for things that he’s not used to doing, but in the meantime he’s made two three-pointers, he’s made a few more blocks, he’s grabbing rebounds… he’s starting to be a factor. I am confident, I am convinced that with work and motivation he and the others will improve.”
On Woldetensae: «Tomas is an exceptional boy, who has much more inside than what he sometimes conveys. Yesterday his attitude was exceptional, he is a player who is able to find remarkable solutions, who puts his heart and soul and is very strong in defence. He is a very important pivot for our team, he has been in Varese for a few years and is proving that he also has a big heart: this also makes others understand how important it is to play for Varese.”
On the Australian issue: «I have built my credibility by always respecting my word and contracts, never letting a day pass beyond the agreed dates. Here we found ourselves faced with an opportunity, and we found ourselves faced with people who to date have not demonstrated the seriousness and respect that a signed contract must have. I’m not ashamed to express myself explicitly: they were supposed to pay us the sponsorship on July 10th, but to date nothing has arrived. On October 31st, the date on which the first installment was supposed to be paid, there was nothing. Closing the doors to an opportunity is always difficult, but Pallacanestro Varese, Luis Scola, Varese Nel Cuore, Basket Siamo Noi and all those who are part of the corporate structure have the right to be respected. We will carry on as we have always done, Luis has a project on which the shareholders and board of directors are aligned with him. We will move forward, possibly with some other solution.”
