The NFL’s goal is to internationalize its product and taking regular season games outside of American territory has worked great. This year three games have been played in London and this week the first of the two matches agreed for Frankfurt, Germany in the 2023 season will take place.
The duel between the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs at Deutsche Bank Park will be the first in the NFL in the city of Frankfurt and the third in the regular season in Germany. In international matches, those in the AFC West have a 2-0 record with wins in London (2015) and Mexico (2019). For their part, those in the Eastern division have a 1-4 record outside of American territory and the only victory was achieved in 2014 on British soil.
The first regular season game outside the United States was played in 2005 south of the Rio Grande border with the duel between the Arizona Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers. This match was advertised under the name ‘NFL Futbol Americano’ and had a record audience with 103,467 fans present at the Azteca Stadium.
Since the NFL established the International Series in 2007, London is the city that has hosted the most NFL regular season games with 36 of the 43 that have been played so far. Mexico has had four while Germany will finish the season with three.

Spain, the new European option of the NFL
During the NFL’s stay in London last October, commissioner Roger Goodell stated that the league is interested in playing in new international markets as early as next season.
According to the Associated Press report, the two options are Spain and Brazil for NFL games in 2024. The cities on which the visit of the league authorities has focused were Madrid, in Spain, and Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo in Brazil.
