The New Mentality of the NBA World: Carmelo Anthony’s Legacy

Carmelo Anthony and the new mentality of the NBA world

Carmelo Anthony, who retired only a few months ago, had a complete and satisfying career: he played for some of the best teams in the NBA, he was a franchise player, he was among the best scorers in the league, he was an All-Star and also All-NBA, putting his indelible signature in the history of basketball. Yet, fans and media can’t help but make him weigh the lack: a title.

Melo searched for the ring for a long time, first as a leader and then as a role player, without ever reaching his goal.

Has all this affected him? Yes, it is inevitable, but not excessively. Speaking to Complex, Anthony spoke thus about ring culture:

Ring culture talk no longer bothers me because the game has changed and the narrative has changed. Ring culture was very big in the 80s and 90s.

I think players’ careers are more about money now. The players want to earn 200 million, the title is no longer the only priority, you know what I mean? Today players always want to win the title, but before chasing it they want to get a contract worth 60 million. So the mentality has changed.

It’s unfair that players who didn’t win don’t get credit. We know who Charles Barkley was, we know who Reggie Miller was, we are who we are. Shouldn’t we be appreciated just because we didn’t win an NBA title? I think people can understand that not everyone can win.

Don’t worry Melo, no one will ever forget your mid-range jumper.
