By Adiel Kalonji | NBA Editor

Kyrie Irving and Russell Westbrook are similar in many ways. But beyond, for example, their often conflicting relationship with the media, the two playmakers have a long-standing relationship which they recently recalled.

Their almost simultaneous trades during last season are part of their common points. But from a more global point of view, Kyrie Irving et Russell Westbrook both knew how to leave their mark on the history of the NBA and continue to do so. Both decried by many analysts and dubbed by the legends of their sport, they share the same rage to win and the same constant desire to progress.

In addition to these sporting similarities, the two star leaders share, above all, bonds of friendship. Links that they temporarily had to leave aside during the recent clash between Mavericks and Clippers, largely won by the Angelenos (107-88). The post-match press conference was, however, an opportunity for them to recall these good relationships and to send each other some flowers.

Luka Doncic mocked after Russell Westbrook attack: “He was…

Russell Westbrook : Kyrie is better this year. We trained together several times during the summer. It’s always interesting to hear his point of view and how he lives his life. I respect him for everything he represents, especially on the family level. He is obviously an exceptional basketball player who has done great things in the league. It’s mutual respect, but I’m always grateful to him for supporting me.

Kyrie Irving : I am grateful to have the right to such respect. I think it’s something that starts far from the field. If you look at the Clippers, Kawhi Leonard was in my draft class, Paul George arrived a year before and Russ a few years before that. I’ve been playing against these guys for a very long time. We went to Team USA camps together, we played playoff series against each other…

Some of us were even teammates. I think you may have noticed that we are more at the end than the beginning of our careers, so each time we compete, we enjoy it. But off the field, we see each other in the summer, we always ask for news of our families and we wish them the best. So I appreciate that respect, and it goes both ways.

Let us rejoice while there is still time. Russell Westbrook and Kyrie Irving have graced us with their presence for many years in the NBA and rightly relish the fact of always being able to offer us duels at the top. All with respect.
