Spaniard Pedro Acosta (KTM), who will be promoted to MotoGP next season, was crowned Moto2 world champion after finishing second in Sunday’s Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang.
Considered one of the greatest hopes in motorcycle speed, the 19-year-old Spanish rider flew through the Moto2 season, winning seven Grands Prix and securing fourteen podiums in 18 races.
Acosta, who had already been crowned Moto3 world champion in 2021, will discover the premier category in 2024 with Gasgas-Tech 3, a KTM satellite team led by Frenchman Hervé Poncharal.
The native of Mazarron, a coastal town located in the southeast of Spain, will replace his compatriot Pol Espargaro, who still had one year of contract with KTM but will ultimately have to settle for a place as a test rider with the Austrian manufacturer.
Espargaro (32), Moto2 world champion in 2013, is competing in his tenth season in MotoGP. The Spaniard suffered serious neck and jaw injuries during testing for the first race of the season in Portugal and was forced to withdraw from the first eight rounds of the championship.
The younger brother of Aleix Espargaro, who also races in MotoGP for Aprilia, is only in 23rd position in the world championship with 13 points on the clock.
