The Firefighter Coach: Ingo Freyer’s Unpredictable Basketball Journey

Hagen Apparently it was already decided that “fireman” Ingo Freyer would take over the ailing Crailsheim Merlins. But this time he is not the savior in an emergency.

The number 1 topic of conversation in the Hagen basketball scene was not this Tuesday, November 14th Phoenix Hagen – but Phoenix Hagen’s former coach, Ingo Freyer (52). He has now been given the reputation of a firefighter in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL). Because he’s there when there’s a fire.

At the beginning of 2022, Freyer put out the fire at EWE Baskets Oldenburg, and in April 2023 he saved the Central German BC from blazing flames. Both clubs managed to stay in the league with Freyer on the sidelines. Quite confidently, actually. Oldenburg would even have been on course for the playoffs if the playing time could have been extended by a few more matches.

It stayed with short missions

Despite his impeccable work, the 52-year-old Freyer did not stay beyond the season – neither in Oldenburg nor in Weißenfels. It stayed with short assignments, which is in contrast to Freyer’s previous coaching positions: he coached Phoenix Hagen from 2007 to 2016 (and famously put out one or two fires there too), and the Gießen 46ers from 2017 to 2020.

Back to the here and now: This Tuesday, the basketball trade magazine BIG reported on its social media platforms that Ingo Freyer is supposedly taking over the struggling Bundesliga bottom club Crailsheim Merlins. And no one questioned the report. Of course, if there’s a fire in Crailsheim, the sirens of Ingo Freyer’s fire engine must have been wailing for a long time. But in the afternoon the Merlins announced that Jussi Laakso would succeed the fired Nikola Markovic as the new head coach. Not Ingo Freyer. A classic duck.

Of course, it cannot be ruled out that firefighter Freyer will be back on duty again soon. As is well known, there is a regular fire in the table cellar.
