The crisis at Ajax is close to Wesley Sneijder’s heart. Due to the 5-2 defeat against PSV, the Amsterdam team is currently in a historic last place in the Eredivisie. In an interview with the German TZ Sneijder says that it is ‘very difficult’ to watch Ajax at the moment.
“AZ, Feyenoord, PSV… These teams are playing in Europe this season because Ajax has taken very important coefficient points in the Champions League,” says Sneijder. “The whole country realizes that a disaster is happening at Ajax, even the fans of other clubs.”

In the period 2017-22, in which it was determined which clubs entered Europe this season, Ajax scored a total of 90 points ahead of the Netherlands. This made it the best performing club; PSV (49 points), Feyenoord (46.5 points), AZ (35.5 points) and Vitesse (19.5 points) also contributed significantly to the coefficient. FC Utrecht (4 points) and Willem II (2 points) made a minimal contribution. In total, Ajax accounted for 36.7 percent of the number of points that the Netherlands won between 2017 and 2022, which makes Sneijder’s statement somewhat unqualified.
In the interview, Sneijder repeats a statement he also made on Monday Veronica Offside: that he cannot rule out relegation for Ajax. “As long as you are at the bottom, there is a serious risk of relegation,” says the former midfielder. “Ajax has good players such as Steven Bergwijn, but the defense, for example, is very weak. Every team in the Netherlands has a chance against Ajax and can score a lot of goals. The attackers have to play well to compensate for the number of goals conceded. That is not the case now. “
