The Atlantic Department Shines with Silver and Bronze Medals in Track Cycling, Weightlifting, Judo, Rhythmic Gymnastics, and Athletics at the 2023 Coffee Axis National Games

Six medals were silver in the sports of: track cycling, weightlifting, judo, rhythmic gymnastics and athletics.

Anthony Zambrano made his debut in the Games, finishing off the Atlantic quartet in the 4 x 100 relay, to win the silver medal.

Vanessa Galindo won two bronze and one silver in rhythmic gymnastics. In weightlifting, Maira Prado also won three medals: two silver and one bronze. Likewise, Duván Ferrer, in weightlifting, won three bronze medals.

Armenia, November 22, 2023. Atlantic Governorate. A sensational shot by Anthony Zambrano allowed Atlántico to win its first silver medal in athletics at the 2023 Coffee Axis National Games, by closing the work of the 4×100 speed quartet.

Atlántico finished behind Valle del Cauca and ahead of Antioquía, gold and bronze, respectively, in a race that was resolved in the last 25 meters of the Armenian track.

“Thankful to God for allowing me to defend the flag. It’s not my test, but I’m used to being an all-rounder, that’s why I told my teammates that we would fight until the end, we had to change history so that it wasn’t always Valle and Antioch. Things didn’t go perfectly, but we are adjusting,” said Zambrano, after receiving the medal.

In the 100 meter hurdles competition, the Atlantic runner María Rocha climbed onto the podium by winning the bronze medal, behind María Murillo and Eliecit Palacios from Antioquia, who placed 1-2, respectively.

Another bronze medal for the department came in the final of the women’s 4X100, where the Atlantic quartet came third behind the winner Valle and the second Antioquía.

During the morning session, without any major problems, the world runner-up and Olympic silver medalist, Anthony Zambrano, made his way to the final of the 400 meter dash by setting the best time of the five qualifying heats, with a figure of 47.77.

This Wednesday, Zambrano will go in search of national gold in the event of his specialty.

On the other hand, in the 110 meter hurdles event, Alexandro Sanmartín took fifth place in the final.

After the day, there were one silver and three bronzes for the department.

With six medals, weightlifting began

Maira Prado, in the 45 kilogram division, won the silver medals and one copper medal, while Duván Ferrer won three bronze medals, in the 55 kilogram division.

Prado, 26 years old, was one kilo away from achieving gold in the snatch category. Patricia Mercado from Riseraldense surpassed her, after three attempts, by lifting 74 kilograms, while ours added 73. Nayibe Medina, from Antioquia, and with 68 kilograms, was third.

In the clean and jerk, the Risaraldense put distance from her first attempt, by lifting 89 kilograms, the same weight as Medina. Maira had scored 85 and, in her subsequent attempts, she was unable to finish the move and finished third. Finally, Mercado put his figure at 94 kilos, with which he secured the gold in the clean and jerk and, incidentally, the highest medal in the total.

The 85 kilos that Prado achieved in the clean and jerk were enough to secure the silver in total. Mercado was gold with 188 kilograms; Maira, silver with 158; and Medina, bronze with 157.

At the end, and amidst tears, the Atlantic athlete dedicated the medals to her little Mía, three years old. “She lived this experience with me. She accompanied me to the gym to practice, even with food because I had to go on a diet and she did it with me. This is from her and my husband because they were my support from day one,” she said excitedly.

Duván Ferrer, for his part, fought until the end to be on the 55 kilogram podium and he achieved it.

In the snatch, the Atlantic native lifted 105 kilos on his first attempt. The next two were void and, with that result, he climbed to the bottom step of the best. The first was occupied by Juan Peña, from Meta, with 110 kilograms and the second by Miguel Suárez, from Tolima, with 108.

Precisely, the ‘pijao’ dominated the clean and jerk and the overall test.

In the second movement, he put 135 kilos on the bar with which he secured the gold of the clean and jerk and the total, in which he accumulated 243 kilograms.

Peña was second in the clean and jerk, with 132, and in total, with 242 kilograms.

Duván raised 131 on the second attempt and, although he wanted to raise on the last one, he could not make the complete movement. In the end he added 236 kilograms to the total.

“I fought a lot, that’s the truth. These are my first Games and I feel like I gained a lot of experience. I tried to lift 136 on the last attempt, which gave me the silver medal, but, unfortunately, I couldn’t do it,” said the athlete who also dedicated his performance to his little Paulette, just two years old.

Cycling closed with silver and bronze

On the last day of track cycling, the Atlanticians Martha Ojeda and Cristian Ortega added two more medals for the red and white delegation.

Ojeda was the first to take to the track at the Alcides Nieto Patiño Velodrome and, in the 500 meter time trial, she placed third, with a time of 35.22. Antioquia made it 1-2 with Martha Bayona and Yarli Mosquera.

In the last track cycling competition for the Atlántico, Cristian Ortega placed second in the kilometer test with a stopped start.

Ortega was surpassed by Santiago Ramírez from Antioquia and defeated the world champion, Kevin Quintero, from Valle, who took the bronze in the competition.

Track cycling gave the Atlantic nine medals, one gold, six silver and one bronze. Ortega won gold and three silver, including one with the sprint team.

Vanessa Galindo stood on the podium three times in the rhythmic gymnastics final

Vanessa Galindo had a sensational day at the close of rhythmic gymnastics, becoming a multi-medallist after standing on the podium three times in the apparatus finals, with one silver and two bronzes, which were held at the Gymnastics Coliseum of the Estadio Centenario sports complex. of Armenia, sub-host of the National Games.

Vanessa won the silver medal in the first final of the day, where with a beautiful routine she won the silver medal in the hoop apparatus.

The gold was won by Lina Dussan, from Bogotá, and the bronze was won by Oriana Viñas, from Boyacá.

Immediately afterwards, Dussan made her second metal of the day, coming third in the ball competition, where she took personal revenge for a mistake in her routine during the all-around.

The judokas of the Atlantic began to collect medals

In the -100 kg combat category, Emmanuel Patiño easily qualified for the final. There he met the experienced and multiple national champion Francisco Balanta, from Valle. Despite Patiño’s efforts, the man from Valle managed to win the gold medal, and Atlántico with the silver.

José Luis Wright, in the -90 kg, fell in the semifinals against his rival from Risaralda. However, he managed to recover and in the battle for the bronze medal he beat his counterpart from Huila, Santiago Fajardo, who with three fouls committed “Hansokumake”, which corresponds to the fighter’s disqualification.

Two bronze medals for karate in Manizales

Karate continues to bring medals to the Atlantic in the National Games. On Tuesday, karatekas Maricarmen Ordosgoitte and Sebastián Cassiani each won a bronze medal.

Maricarmen, 18 years old, took third place in kumite, -55 kg category; while Cassiani did the same in the -75 kg category.

This Wednesday will be the last day of karate in the National Games, where Atlántico hopes to continue winning medals for the department.

First day of billiards

The first day of billiards in Manizales was held at Expoferias, the first shift was for the individual three-cushion modality. On this day, Pedro González won his two games in group six and thus advanced to the next round.

Giselle Jaraba beat the representative of Norte de Santander 21 – 8 in the initial match of Tuesday’s schedule and lost 16 – 1 to Magdalena in the double commitment in the individual modality, in the Tejo of the National Games.
