The ARA Comarques Gironines supplement celebrates 10 years with the Roca brothers

Girona 10 years ago, El Celler de Can Roca became the best restaurant in the world according to the magazine Restaurant. The supplement was also born 10 years ago Now Girona Regions. To celebrate, we have prepared for months, with the help of the Roca, Joan, Josep and Jordi brothers, an author’s supplement dedicated to the transformation of the city in the last decade that you will find in the newsstand this Thursday. The supplement, which is published every Thursday inside the ARA, doubles the launch and we dedicate 16 pages to reviewing the relationship between the Roca and Girona brothers.

Our 10 years, together with the 10 years of recognition of El Celler de Can Roca as the best restaurant in the world, constitute a happy coincidence that deserved a joint celebration. This author’s supplement starts from the mountain where Girona originated, the castle of Sant Julià de Ramis. It’s a good metaphor for the goals pursued by ARA journalism and Roca’s gastronomy: a vantage point to look to the future from the roots of the past.

The Girona of the Roca brothers

As good hosts, the Roca brothers have opened the doors of La Fortalesa to us, located on the mountain of Sants Metges de Sant Julià de Ramis. They rented it last year and it will soon become another part of their universe. They also tell us about the gastronomic, green, sports and urban transformation of the city. But without forgetting the essence and the traveling companions that make family gastronomic excellence viable: the matriarchy of El Celler de Can Roca. We have gathered the mother, Montserrat Fontané, with the three young women, in charge of different businesses: Anna Payet, Encarna Tirado and Alejandra Rivas.

From the hand of Jordi Roca, we will present this Thursday the supplement with a party in the rest room of the Teatre Municipal de Girona at 6.30 p.m. It will also be the opportunity to celebrate this decade by doing journalism thought, produced and written from Girona with a global perspective. The event is presented by Antoni Bassas and will also be attended by Esther Vera, who will talk to the pastry chef of Celler de Can Roca. The group from Sant Llorenç de la Muga Northern Cellos will enliven the meeting.

A vantage point to look at the future from the roots of the past

For the supplement team Now Girona Regions, Girona is the capital, but also any of the towns in its counties. But not to do localist and short-sighted journalism, but to look for transversal topics, of human interest, stories that can interest any restless and curious reader. This is the requirement that was asked of us when a group of Girona journalists who firmly believed in that new Catalan newspaper born in the middle of the media crisis went to the Barcelona office to propose a supplement dedicated to the Girona regions.

We immediately realized that our proposal was valid, it had enormous receptivity, which fits with the newspaper’s desire to be more present throughout the Catalan territory (what is euphemistically called “the territory”), but in exchange for giving it more ambition and, at the same time, more responsibility. The supplement would not only be added to the newspapers sold in the demarcation of Girona, but to the entire national edition. First, it was published with the Friday paper edition, and later and until today, in the Thursday edition. It is the same formula adopted by the rest of the territorial supplements that came later.

The first supplement was published on October 25, 2013, coinciding with the Sant Narcís Fairs, and was presented in the rest room of the Municipal Theatre, where this Thursday we are celebrating 10 years. Then Antoni Bassas interviewed the then mayor, Carles Puigdemont. Founding director Carles Capdevila said that the ARA arrived in Girona “with absolute modesty and admiration for fellow journalists from Girona”.

Daily information from the regions of Girona

The monthly frequency was immediately shortened to fortnightly. And in just over two years the supplement became weekly. But from the very beginning, taking advantage of the newspaper’s digital matrix, the articles on the web were strengthened and covered every day of the week. And until today, where under the direction of Esther Vera the project has been given a great boost and the team of journalists has grown Girona counties. On the web, Girona articles appear in their own tab, with daily publications on all kinds of topics and which the reader can have grouped in a strictly Girona digital newspaper.

Since a month ago, readers can also subscribe to the Newsletter Girona of the ARA, so that they have all the content created by the team grouped together on a weekly basis Girona counties. The team is made up of Mariona Ferrer, delegate in Girona; the coordinator of the supplement, Marta Costa-Pau; journalists Gerard Bagué and Jordi Carreras; our correspondent in Girona, Aniol Costa-Pau; and the sports correspondent, Jordi Bofill. And we have the weekly opinion article by the writer Toni Sala.

During these 10 years we have given voice to the most dynamic, creative and critical people in civil society, the business world, education, culture, science and farming. Our readers form an active, dynamic, critical community, which congratulates us on successes and alerts us to shortcomings and mistakes. We appreciate it and believe that paying subscribers are one of the foundations of good journalism. Nor do we forget the support of our advertisers, the town councils and the Girona institutions, who immediately believed in the project and continue to bet on it.
