The 56th Manuel Campos Judo Tournament: A Resounding Success and a Long-Standing Tradition in Spain

The 56th edition of the Manuel Campos Judo Tournament, which stands as the longest-running competition in this form of fighting in Spainhas been a resounding success in terms of participation, with a full crowd in the stands that rewarded the efforts of the young judokas with displays of affection from an audience that was outstanding.

A total of 800 athletes, between 3 and 15 years old, belonging to 28 clubs in Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarotemet this Sunday morning at the Ciudad Deportiva Gran Canaria (Martín Freire), in which all the clubs, including those of Tenerife, Granadilla and Shudocan, They showed the good work they do during the year in their training. Likewise, 68% of the participants were boys and 32% girls. Furthermore, it is worth noting that 50% of the judokas were children between 3 and 7 years old, and the other 50% were from the rest of the categories from 8 to 12 and 13 to 15 years old.

It is noteworthy that everyone participated with great enthusiasm and showed what they are capable of, since only by taking care of the details they showed their possibilities after arduous and methodological work, always directed under the watchful eye of their teachers and demonstrating a great variety of techniques despite his young age.

Own Manuel Campos stated that it has been “a great day for judo, with unbeatable participation, organization. I thank all the fathers and mothers, and all those who have participated for making this tournament possible.” At the same time he added that the most important thing for him is “the enthusiasm” of the participating boys and girls. In addition, he noted that for the 57th edition hopes that “due to the needs of participants and visitors, we can do it at the Island Sports Center of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, since with this we want to take another step to strengthen the base of this sporting modality.”

The Manuel Campos Tournament, dean of grassroots sports in Spain and promotion of the judo youth, has been held since January 1967 in The Gran Canarian palms, three years before this sport became part of the Tokyo Olympic Games.
