Tennis Legend Boris Becker Mentoring Young Star Holger Rune for Career Development

Tennis legend Boris Becker has been coaching the Dane Holger Rune for a few weeks now. The youngster has now revealed that he has been receiving advice from the three-time Wimbledon winner for a long time.

“He always wrote to me and gave me a few tips, that was in 2020 or 2021. We have been in contact since then,” revealed Rune in “Sport Bild”.

The 20-year-old raved highly about his new coach. “He had a great serve and was very dynamic on the court,” said Rune, who emphasized: “But he’s not here to change me, but to develop me further.”

The Dane still has a lot to do in his career: “I’m only 20, so I’m far from finished and I still have a lot of work to do. I always tell myself that I want to develop further every day.”

The ATP tournament in Basel was the first acid test for Rune and Becker. In the semi-finals, the jewel had to admit defeat 3:6, 2:6 against the strong Felix Auger-Aliassime. “It’s a great pleasure to work with Holger. He’s incredibly motivated, he listens, he wants to learn, play the best tennis,” said Becker in Basel and added: “It’s a pleasure for every coach to work with someone like that willing students to work.”

The fact that Rune Becker is celebrating similarly on the court is probably just a coincidence. “We didn’t rehearse the Becker fist. But it’s great to see what comes out of the box,” emphasized the Danish hopeful.

It is still unclear whether Becker will continue to look after Rune in 2024. What is certain is that the German tennis legend is not allowed to travel to every country because of his prison past. For example, the 55-year-old would miss Wimbledon. However, that wouldn’t be a problem for Rune. “If he takes part in 25 of 26 tournaments, that’s okay,” said the current number seven in the world.
