Teams from Israel and Poland remain silent

The U-21 football players from Poland and Israel showed moral courage in a joint minute’s silence in the European Championship qualifier on Friday evening in Lodz – contrary to UEFA’s guidelines and after the game had already started.

The two teams decided to take this solidarity action after the football association did not approve the minute’s silence before the start of the game for the victims of the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7th.

The teams then organized the minute’s silence on their own. After kick-off, the players agreed to remain in their positions for some time and not start the game normally.

Poland ultimately won the game 2-1, meaning the team retained its lead in qualifying group D ahead of the German team, which won 4-1 against Estkand in the evening. What will probably stick, however, are the scenes immediately after kick-off.

Israel’s U-21s have to play the away game in Kosovo next Tuesday. Their next home game was planned for March 2024 – but given the current political situation, the staging of the games is still open.
