Japanese drums: Taiko: More than just the drums of Japan

Can drums groove? Especially when you look at the “Taiko”. Taiko are barrel-shaped and cylindrical ceremonial drums that originate in Japan. Some people would say “ceremonial drums” and “groove” don’t go together at all.

“That’s not really true,” says Elisabeth Rehms from the Groove Company, the taiko department of the Schiefbahn judo club. She should know, as she founded the Groove Company with Marion Hacker four years ago and has been playing the taiko herself for 15 years.

“We just don’t do it traditionally,” she says. “It’s more groovy for us.” Nevertheless, when the company’s 40 drummers get going, there’s a lot of buzz. But they all have fun. And they want to show that it’s fun in the “Taiko” show at the end of November with other taiko formations. “The show will be a mixture of tradition and modernity,” says Elisabeth Rehms. If you want to see for yourself, you can also visit the Groove Company during their training times. The best way to do this is to contact us by email at [email protected].
