SV Darmstadt 98’s Fabian Holland Receives Reduced Suspension for Red Card Against VfL Bochum

For his supposed emergency brake against VfL Bochum, Fabian Holland is not suspended for two games as usual, but only for one. SV Darmstadt 98 is already struggling with the second red card, which subsequently raises doubts.

It was the 70th minute of the game when Bochum’s Moritz-Broni Kwarteng stormed towards the Darmstadt goal and was stopped with a foul by Fabian Holland around 40 meters in front of the goal. Referee Marco Fritz immediately interpreted the offense as an emergency stop and sent off the captain.

The people of Darmstadt then complained about this decision – and were now at least partially right by the DFB control committee. He decided that Holland would not be banned for two games, as is usual in the event of an emergency stop from which no goal is subsequently scored, but only for one game.

“After viewing the television recording of the incident, the summary procedure can still be applied for a ban for a championship game of the professional leagues, as there are doubts about the obviousness of the goal opportunity,” explained the control committee and cited the “relatively long distance from the club” as the reasons Goal” as well as the “speed and direction of movement of another defensive player who is also running”.

Fritsch criticizes “wrong decisions that were made to our disadvantage”

“For the second time in this young season, the usual penalty has been deviated from after one of our players was suspended, and there are also a few other at least controversial decisions,” complained Lilien President Rüdiger Fritsch in a press release. When it came to Matej Maglica’s alleged handball in the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach (3:3), the association decided on a one-game ban instead of two.

Why so annoyed, Thomas Tuchel?

Fritsch further emphasizes: “Just as we will continue to clearly address our own mistakes in our games, it is also important in the course of a comprehensive review of a game that any wrong decisions that have occurred to our disadvantage are also addressed.”

In the short term, the milder sentence does not solve the problems faced by the people of Darmstadt. For the home game against Mainz 05 on Saturday (3:30 p.m.), the Lilies will have to replace Holland as well as Maglica and Klaus Gjasula – both of whom received the usual two-game ban for their emergency stops against FC Bayern (0:8). After the international break, all three can play again on November 25th against SC Freiburg.
