Sucre: “My role will be to command the pitchers”

The 35-year-old veteran catcher from Cumana, Jesús Sucre, was hired earlier this week by the Águilas del Zulia, after what was a short internship in Dominican baseball (LIDOM) with Leones del Esgido.

Sucre; who will be entering his 15th season in the LVBP, exercised a clause in his contract with El Esído that allowed him to return to his country if requested by a club on the circuit.

“A few days ago the Águilas management contacted me to return to my country and I didn’t hesitate. “I spoke with the management and the manager of Esído to return to my country, they wanted me to stay there, but in my contract it was established that if I had an option to return to the LVBP, I could do so,” said the native of Cumaná.

In eight games at Lidom, Sucre went 5-for-29 (.250), with a double and three RBIs. In his debut with the Eagles he went 0-for-4 and led the predatory pitching against Magallanes in Valencia.

“When I got here I spoke with Gustavo Molina and the manager Néstor Corredor. My role will be to command the team’s pitchers. I have always been characterized by my defense and I come to contribute to the team,” he stated.

Sucre debuted in the Venezuelan league in the 2010-11 campaign with the Leones del Caracas. He also defended the Navegantes del Magallanes and Caribes de Anzoátegui, with whom he reached two finals and won one.

“For me it is an honor to play for the Águilas del Zulia. I always wanted to play here, since I have a lot of family in Maracaibo. “I have a brother there and this is an opportunity to be close to them.”

In the LVBP, Jesús Sucre has a lifetime average of .260, with 90 RBIs, 29 doubles, eight home runs and great defense behind the plate.
