Steven Berghuis believes that people cannot yet make an honest judgment about Ajax’s new players, the attacker told NOS. During last summer, Ajax bought twelve new players and many purchases have already been written off in some media. Berghuis doesn’t think that’s fair.

“It has not been a very good basis for the new players to perform,” the Ajax player clearly begins his story. Berghuis says that he also experienced this himself at a new club. ‘I came here two years ago in a group that was already together and the principles of the game were already in place, so for me it was just a matter of joining. These guys just don’t have that, so you can’t give an honest opinion about that yet. I just see quality on the training field. Then I’m happy that an Akpom, for example, makes such a beautiful header.’

According to the experienced Ajax player, the Amsterdam club currently has ‘quite a nice group’, but Berghuis immediately makes a comment about that. ‘It still has to grow together. We have nice qualities and a few more guys are coming, such as Kaplan and Rulli. These are also important boys for the group.’

‘The important thing is to hold on to it and keep all the frogs in the wheelbarrow’

With John van ‘t Schip, Berghuis now has the 25th trainer in his career. The attacker also recognizes a certain trend. ‘Where someone new stands for the group and everyone has new energy again. The key is to hold on to that and keep all the frogs in the wheelbarrow. That process will start and move again in the coming weeks. Hopefully we can all do it together.’
